Summer food safety tips
Iowa Department of Public Health is seeing an increase in foodborne illness reports, which tend to peak during the summer. Warmer temperatures help pathogens such as Salmonella thrive. Bacteria multiply rapidly at room temperature or in the “Danger Zone” between 40°F and 140°F, so never leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if it’s hotter than 90°F outside).

Schedule back-to-school exams now to avoid the rush
Many families may be playing catch up with their regular visits to the dentist, eye doctor, and family physician after the delays caused by COVID-19. To avoid the back-to-school rush amid summer vacations, camps, and activities, Delta Dental of Iowa encourages families to contact their health providers now to schedule those dental appointments, eye exams, school physicals, and wellness exams.
CRITICAL STAFFING SHORTAGE LEADS TO ALARMINGLY LOW BLOOD SUPPLY
LifeServe Blood Center, the non-profit community-based blood supplier in our region, is now one of hundreds of organizations across the state facing unprecedented and critical staff shortages. These staff shortages and lack of blood donor turnout is causing the blood supply to dip to alarmingly low levels. The staff shortage is impacting the blood center's ability to hold mobile blood drives.
SAFELY CELEBRATING AN AMERICAN HOLIDAY ON THE ROADS
We
all love to celebrate the 4th of July with family, friends, food and
fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on our
nation's roads. This American holiday also brings increased
consumption of alcohol and drugs which leads to impaired driving and
deadly consequences.
According
to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nationally,
during the 2019 July 4th holiday period (the most recent statistics
available), 515 people died in motor vehicle crashes and 198 of these
fatalities occurred in an alcohol-impaired crash.
SAVE LOCAL LIVES THIS SUMMER BY GIVING BLOOD
LifeServe Blood Center is asking community members to give blood to help patients in local hospitals this summer.Travel, outdoor fun, boating, and other summer activities can all lead to an increase in traumas in local emergency rooms. Many of these patients will require blood transfusions as part of their treatment or recovery. To ensure blood is available for this increased need, please give blood at an upcoming blood drive in your community! Appointments are required.
